Urban Apiary

Were you aware that over a third of the food we consume and nearly three quarters of plant varieties rely on bee pollination? These statistics alone reveal how crucial bees are for the planet and humanity.

Bees also serve as essential bioindicators, revealing the condition of the environment surrounding us and the air we inhale.

However, factors like pesticide use, land overexploitation, widespread monoculture farming, and shifts in climate have caused a continuous drop in bee populations.

At nimax , we fully recognise that preserving the environment forms a key part of an ethical business approach. To achieve genuine results, this commitment needs to include practical everyday choices that uphold sustainability and respect for our surroundings.

Each of us, in our daily lives, can take action to defend bees and their ecosystems, as their existence is vital for our future and a duty shared by all.

Out of this understanding, and following a meeting between Nicola Montanari, CEO of nimax, and Zeid Nabulsi, a young apiarist from Damascus living in Bologna for many years who created BeeBo, a project centred on ethical beekeeping, emerged the idea of installing an Urban Apiary atop our premises.

The 9 beehives, each home to between 30,000 and 70,000 bees, are positioned above the offices and streets to ensure harmony and safety between the bees and nimax team members.

Honey from the hives will be processed and packaged by BeeBo, then distributed among staff, while the wellbeing of each colony will be closely observed, also giving accurate insights into air purity and environmental health within a 3 km area.

Moreover, you can watch the bees live via a webcam installed in front of their hives.

The nimax Urban Apiary project was created with three connected objectives:

  • to provide a secure location for placing the hives;
  • to share with colleagues and clients the fascination of these creatures and the symbolism of their cooperation for collective benefit,
  • to support environmental assessment.

Nimax Uganda has chosen not to leave the safeguarding of our ecosystem to others but to take on positive everyday habits that yield swift results and encourage others to do the same. Even industries can adopt an engaged approach that surpasses minimum regulatory requirements.
